Moving Timeline Checklist


6 Weeks

  • Figure out what moving supplies you are going to need, and purchase them
  • Check on mover's insurance for moving damages

5 Weeks

  • Notify doctors of move and ask for referrals and prescription transfers to new city

4 Weeks

  • Cancel or transfer magazines, clubs and services paid for monthly, as many require 30 days advance notice
  • Set aside items for donation or yard sale (Remember to get donation receipts for tax purposes)
  • Arrange for the transfer of school records for yourself or children

3 Weeks

  • Fill out Change-of-Address forms for Post Office
  • Fill out Change-of-Address forms for IRS
  • Take pictures or video tape your belongings; in the event you need to file an insurance claim.
  • Start packing

2 Weeks

  • Service your automobile (Better safe than sorry!)
  • Alert utility services, insurance, credit cards, family and friends, and others about your new address.

1 Week

  • Close or transfer bank accounts
  • Confirm the date of services with your moving company

2 Days

  • Defrost freezer and refrigerator. Place deodorizer inside to control odors.

Moving Day

  • Confirm new address with moving company
  • Make a final walk-through of your old residence
  • Get excited for your new home!

Once You're There

  • Be there when the truck arrives. Make sure all boxes have arrived undamaged before signing paperwork.
  • Before moving in, conduct a walk-through inspection to take note of any damages. Protect railings and hardwood floors with cushioning to avoid damage while moving

First Night Survival Kit

You may not have access to all of your belongings on the first night or day of your move. In a separate box, pack essential items, including:

  • Emergency Contact Numbers
  • Medications
  • First Aid Kit
  • Flashlight
  • Tool Kit (for reassembling those items that could not be moved in one piece)
  • Snacks or small meals and paper/plastic kitchenware
  • Change of Clothes
  • Personal Items (towels, toothbrush, contact solution, toilet paper, etc.)
  • Bed Sheets or Sleeping Bags
  • Pillows
  • Duck® brand duct tape
